ATHENS – Outspoken far-right former Independent Greeks (ANEL) lawmaker Rachil Makri said she will be running on the ticket of the poll-leading far-left major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) in the Jan. 25 elections.
With ANEL unlikely to win seats in Parliament and having already been ousted from the party after a rift with leader Panos Kammenos, Makri’s move means she’d likely return to Parliament.
But the idea of having a provocative extremist opposed to the Leftists joining them has rankled some in SYRIZA who reportedly don’t want her in the party.
Makri will be running for Member of Parliament for SYRIZA in Kozani in northern Greece. She is known for her off-the-cuff shoot-from-the-hip style of speaking and making outrageous comments.
