ISTANBUL – One of Greece’s top two teams, Olympiakos, was beaten here by Galatasaray 79-74 for its second loss in the first round of the Euroleague basketball tourney.

Despite the loss, the Reds still finished first in the pool with eight wins and had little motivation knowing they would come out on top regardless of the result.

Galatasaray also advanced to the last 16 of the Euroleague and will be in the same group as Panathinaikos in the second round. The victors jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the listless Olympiakos, which came back to close the deficit to 38-36 at the half.

The Turkish team led 57-50 after three and was up by 11 in the final period before Olympiakos closed to within one at 69-68 before the rally fe short.  Matt Lojeski was the top scorer for Olympiakos with 22 points.

On Dec. 17 PAOK defeated Buducnost 81-76 in Podgorica to claim the second spot in its Eurocup group.
