Patriotism led young George Abramides, a native of Albany, NY with Greek parents from Asia Minor who moved to Thessaloniki following the 1912 Balkan War, to enlist in the United States Marines on April 7, 1942.

He volunteered.  Exactly four months after the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, prompting the United States to enter World War II.

And exactly four months after that, Abramides’ First Marine Division was the one that invaded Gudalcanal, beginning a six-month-long campaign by the Allied forces against Japan, with the Allies emerging victorious in the first battle directly pitting American and Japanese forces against one another.

Upon his return to the United States, Abramides became a member of Eleftheria VFW Post 6633.

Eleftheria 6633 is the only predominantly-Greek VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) post in the United States. George Baxavaneos, who served as Post Commander for 22 years, captured the richly-documented history of its members, in the 2013 compendium Honor and Remembrance: a Lifetime of Service to Our Country and Community, from which the above information was obtained.
