BANGOR, ME – Rev. Adam Metropoulos, presiding priest St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bangor, ME since 2001, was arrested on September 15, accused of possessing child pornography and photographing a woman without her consent. Fr. Metropoulos, 52 years old and married, was charged with one count each of possession of sexually explicit material, a Class C crime, and violation of privacy, a Class D crime, according to Bangor police.

He was jailed at the Penobscot County Jail. Bail of $10,000 cash was put on by the Penobscot County District Attorney’s office.

If convicted, Metropoulos faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the possession of child pornography charge, and up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $2,000 on the violation of privacy charge.

Metropolitan Methodios of Boston told TNH that “I placed him on suspension from all Liturgical duties and I am waiting to see the official report by the authorities.”

On September 13, Bangor police received a complaint from an adult female indicating that she believed she had been photographed and or videoed without her permission or knowledge. As a result of that complaint, detectives began an investigation that resulted in Metropoulos’ arrest.

The news has astonished the small parish of St. George of almost 100 families. Parish Council President Lee Speronis and Vice President George Leokas have not responded to TNH’s request for comment.

TNH has learned that the woman who reported Fr. Metropoulos to the authorities was his wife’s sister, who had come to visit with them on the weekend, but Police Sgt. Tim Cotton refused to comment on that because the investigation continues.

Sgt. Cotton, however, told TNH that “the woman was staying at Metropoulos’ home and she went to take a shower. While in the shower she looked across the bathroom and she observed what she believed to be a camera in a basket on a wall. She exited the shower, went and checked on the camera. It was in fact a camera which was recording her in the shower.” He also said that “she confronted Metropoulos and told him that she was going to report him. She provided the Police with the memory card that she took out of the camera. Police detectives spoke to Metropoulos, a search warrant was issued, and the Police searched his home, where they found child pornography material.”

Fr. Metropoulos was a native of Saginaw, MI, and he moved to Maine in 1990 and began teaching chemistry at Stearns High School in Millinocket, and he attended Services at St. George’s. In 1997 he entered Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He was ordained into the Holy priesthood and assigned to St. George parish.

The church, comprised of approximately 100 families, celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2010.

Sources told TNH that Fr. Metropoulos had a criminal past. He was convicted of sexual assault in April, 1983 in Saginaw. Apparently, that was the reason he moved to Maine. The Education Department of Maine at that time did not do any background checks; those began in 1999.

The small parish of St. George in Bangor is trying to cope with these unfolding events regarding its priest of 13 years. A parish council meeting was scheduled for Thursday evening to access the situation and move on. The parish doesn’t intend to bail him out.
