ATHENS – Investigators are looking into whether an extortion ring operated inside the high-security Korydallos Prison and how far its reach was.
An investigating magistrate on Jan. 20 granted two suspected members conditional release while remanding another two as the probe deepened.
Those remanded include a foreign national who was arrested recently outside the Metamorphosi home of the cousin of one of the alleged ring leaders, Panayiotis Vlastos, Kathimerini said.
The woman, who is in a witness protection program, has reportedly provided police with valuable insights into the workings of the racket.
The second suspect is the mother of a former fellow inmate of Vlastos and was said to have run errands for the crime boss. The suspects one of Vlastos’s ex-girlfriends and a former Korydallos prison guard.
It was said that the racket also helped anarchist causes and prisoners with a report that one had forged personal documents for two associates of Vlastos who were involved in a thwarted helicopter breakout from Trikala Prison in February 2013.
