With Greece’s national sports teams having big budget cuts in a financial crisis, the men’s volleyball team has nonetheless managed to make the finals of the European League with a comeback win over Slovenia.

Coach Sotiris Drikos’s team had lost 3-2 in the first leg at Thessaloniki on July 12, but on July 16 came back to beat host Slovenia 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22) and advance to the tourney title round.

The victory at Maribor means that Greece will face Montenegro in the final of the European League, the second-tier competition that offers its winner a ticket to the top tournament, the World League.

Dimitris Tzourits led the Greeks with a strong outing, scoring 31 points.
