BUDVA, Montenegro – Greece’s men’s volleyball team, which made it into the European finals with some stirring comebacks, couldn’t do it again, falling to Montenegro, losing a second match 3-1 in games.
Greece had lost 3-2 in Thessaloniki and needed a 3-0 or 3-1 victory away to clinch the title and started off strong, winning the first set, 25-22.
But then, ahead 7-6 in the second game, Greece got bad luck when star player Panayiotis Pelekoudas suffered an injury and the team couldn’t rally without him.
Montenegro came back to win that second set, 25-18 and then took the next two 25-18 and 25-21 in a hard-fought match to win the tourney and a spot in next year’s World League, the top-tier competition in international volleyball.
Greece coach Sotiris Drikos said despite the loss he was satisfied with his team’s effort and said that, “The players attitude players’ attitude is exemplary as they have been training and playing for 12 months non-stop.”
