Panathinaikos’ on-again, off-again hoop team fell 73-70 to European champion Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel to go 5-3 in its group but still ahead of its rival based on point differential.
In European basketball, how much a team wins by is as important as winning or losing and the Greens had beaten Maccabi by seven points in Athens.
Panathinaikos fell behind 22-17 after one and 38-30 at the half before cutting it to 54-52 at the end of three and showed some resilience but couldn’t cope on the boards, being outrebounded 44-33.
Maccabi was playing without Greek star Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who had been a stalwart on the Greek national team and played in Greece before jumping to Tel Aviv.
Vladimir Jankovic scored 16 points and Nikos Pappas added another 15 on the night for Panathinaikos.
