An exhibition entitled “Mythical Dances of Messenia” was inaugurated yesterday, Friday, at the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata, Peloponnese.

The inauguration ceremony was timed to coincide with the 20th International Dance Festival that is being held in the city on July 16-24.

The exhibition, which is scheduled to run until September 30, features archaeological evidence and witness accounts from the ancient times that relate to music and dance.

The exhibits include ancient artifacts on loan from Messenia museums as well as material from excavations of Ancient Messene and Nestor’s Palace, which the public will have the opportunity to admire for the first time.

Anna-Vassiliki Karapanagiotou, curator of the Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities Ephorate, conducted a tour of the exhibition at the museum on Saturday morning which was followed by a brief demonstration of dances by the Kalamata Municipal Dance School.

The tour will be repeated on Wednesday, July 23 at 20:00.
