ATHENS – With its party leaders and dozens of others set to go on trial this fall, new videos have emerged showing Golden Dawn taught children the Nazi salute.
Footage released by Kathimerini shows the ultra-far right’s second-in-command Christos Pappas instructing young children how to chant “Heil Hitler” and give the Nazi salute.
Pappas, in jail awaiting trial on charges of setting up and running a criminal organization, can be heard urging a young boy holding a Nazi flag and wearing a swastika armband to yell “Heil Hitler.” The boy is praised each time he performs the routine. In another scene, an older girl shows the boy how to give the salute.
The video, one of four allegedly shot on Pappas’s cell phone, is included in the case file against Golden Dawn. The party’s hierarcy, all of whom have been arrested, have steadfastly denied they are neo-Nazis despite a raft of evidence showing they worship Hitler, used Nazi methodology in their organization and have had Mein Kampf on display.
They call themselves nationalists and have a platform that is openly anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-Semitic, anti-Capitalist and are opposed to the Parliament in which they serve.
Despite all that, as well as being accused of orchestrating attacks on immigrants – which it denies – Golden Dawn is third in the hearts of Greek voters and a recent poll gave them 6.7 percent, about the same as they got in the 2012 elections although their popularity had been nearly twice that before one of its members was accused of murdering an anti-Fascist, hip-hop artist in September, 2013.
