NICOSIA — The new United Nations envoy for Cyprus says he will unveil new ideas on nudging forward faltering talks aimed at reunifying the ethnically divided island.

Norway’s Espen Barth Eide says talks haven’t gone as were expected when the island’s rival leaders agreed on a joint declaration in February that inaugurated a fresh round of negotiations.

He says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wants to see talks make headway so that the decades-old dispute is finally resolved.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded in 1974 following a coup by supporters of union with Greece.

Eide was speaking Friday after talks with Nicos Anastasiades, president of the island’s internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south. He would also meet breakaway Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.
