NICOSIA – After a preliminary meet-and-greet, Greek and Turkish Cypriot officials on May 20 will resume negotiations in hopes of reunifying the island that’s been divided since an unlawful Turkish invasion in 1974.

While Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and newly-elected Mustafa Akinci on the Turkish side are the highlighters, the nub of talks will be undertaken by negotiators: Greek Cypriot Andreas Mavroyiannis and Turkish Cypriot Ozdil Nami.

The Cyprus New Agency said that the two sides are expected to draft an outline for Anastasiades and Akinci to follow as they try to resolve issues that have evaded all diplomats, envoys, and officials on Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, the United States, United Nations, European Union and international community for decades.

The two negotiators will look into certain proposals with regard to Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), which will be submitted to the leaders for a decision, CNA said.

The solution must not be imposed on the Cypriots, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Nicosia Stanislav Osandchiy told the agency.

The Ambassador, who was received by Anastasiades, told reporters after the meeting that Russia is willing to contribute to the efforts for a Cyprus solution but is not interfering.

The solution, he added, must come from the Cypriots themselves and must not be imposed on them.
