Greek perennial basketball power Olympiakos needed overtime and a sterling performance from Captain Vassilis Spanoulis to beat Lithuania’s Neptunas Klaipeda, 85-81 in European League play.
The win came despite more defensive lapses and mental mistakes that have plagued the Reds, who managed to hang on in crunch time against the Lithuanian champions.
Neptunas has 11 natives on its 12-man roster, unlike most European teams who have a number of different nationalities, including Olympiakos.
The Lithuanians had a five-point lead with two minutes left, 72-67, before the Greek team rallied to tie in 76-76 in regulation time. Spanoulis came through though and finished with 34 points in 41 minutes, including six-of-11 three-pointers.
