PIRAEUS – In a battle of Brotherly Love and the same colors, Olympiakos’ Reds came from behind to beat the Serbian team Red Star Belgrade, 64-59 in European basketball play on Dec. 12.
Unlike most European battles that are often bitter, Olympiakos and Red Star fans are not hostile to each other and a few weeks ago in Belgrade the Serbs sang along with Olympiakos supporters and this time the Greek fans serenaded their rivals.
The singing over, Olympiakos almost let the game get out of hand with Red Star leading for the first three quarters until Costas Sloukas got his team to rebound.
Led by Boban Marjanovic, who finished with 17 points, Red Star was one up at half-time, 28-27, and led by 48-42 after three before Olympiakos turned up the heat and putting on the clamps on defense, holding the visitors to 11 points in the final period.
This was the eighth win for Olympiakos in nine games, mathematically securing the top spot in the group for the Greeks. Vassilis Spanoulis was the hosts’ top scorer with 15 points.
