ATHENS – A surging Panathinaikos went to 3-0 in European basketball pool play, beating the tough Polish champions Turow, 84-77.
The win came even though the Greens star Dimitris Diamantidis scored only two points and only four from newcomer Julian Wright, an NBA flop out of the University of Arkansas. American AJ Slaughter and Nikos Pappas picked up the slack with 16 each.
Panathinaikos led 42-35 at the half and extended the lead to 54-40 in the third but the Polish team came back through the play of former Olympiakos player Mardy Collins, who has played for 10 teams in eight years, and who wound up with 23 on night.
The visitors closed to within 73-71 before Panathinaikos dug in for the win behind a new generation of Greek players who are replacing aging stars.
