ISTANBUL – Panathinaikos wasted leads but hung on to beat the Turkish team Galatasaray 86-84 on March 27 in European basketball play.
The win lifted the Greens into third place in its bracket two games before the end of the Euroleague top-16 tourney.
The Greek team staved off challenges with a barrage of three point shots, hitting 45 percent from downtown range.
Panathinaikos led 23-16 after the first quarter and 40-38 at half-time and upped the lead to 11 before getting complacent and hung on only because of poor free-throw shooting by Galatasaray, which is last in the group.
James Gist and Esteban Batista scored 14 points each for the Greens.
