ATHENS – Panathinaikos beat back a determined AEK team, 70-62 in the Greek basketball league on Feb. 16 to stay a point behind leader Olympiakos, which had beaten Kolossos Rhodes a day earlier.
AEK was supported by 9,000 fans to see the first game between the two rivals in two years but instead saw Panathinaikos win the 500th game of its career with only 86 losses.
The Greens and the Reds of Olympiakos have dominated the league for decades with most other teams just playing for sport and little hope of contention.
PAOK, which will meet Panathinaikos in the tourney semifinal on Feb. 22, had beaten KAO Dramas, 72-64 on Feb. 13 to stay solid in third place over Aris, which lost 76-60 to Apollon Patras.
AGO Rethymnou came from behind to beat visiting Korivos Amaliadas 78-66; Trikala beat down Panionios, 78-69; and Nea Kifissia escaped the lowly Panelefsiniakos 68-67.
