PITTSBURGH, PA – Moments after top defensive star Dan Girardi hobbled to the Rangers bench with a leg bruise, his teammate Kevin Hayes broke a 1-1 tie to give the Rangers the win over the Pittsburgh Penguins early in the first overtime. The win gives the NHL’s best-record Rangers a commanding 3-1 lead in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The series moves back to Madison Square Garden for Game 5, where the Rangers can wrap it up.

The first four games have all been close, each decided by just one goal. All but Game 2 (Penguins won 4-3) have been defensive battles, all with scores of 2-1.

The Blueshirts’ swarming defense have held Sidney Crosby, arguably the league’s best player, to two goals, both in Game 2.
