Olympiakos’ basketball power survived a scare from upstart Korivos Amaliadas to hold on to a 79-73 win while AGO Rethymnou defeated host Nea Kifissia, 74-64 to grab third place in the Greek league.

Olympiakos trailed on several occasions to the newly-elevated Korivos squad which gave Reds’ coach Yiannis Sfairopoulos a start and reason to tell his players not to be complacent.

The Cretan team Rethymnou was led by American point guard Vincent Council out of Providence College who scored 22 points and earned the league’s Most Valuable Player award for the second time in three weeks.

Champion Panathinaikos was in good form, pounding Panionios 92-61 at home in front of about 9,000 fans at the Olympic Sports Hall, to extend its perfect record to eight games.

PAOK suffered another loss, this one to Apollon Patras, 80-70 while while Aris put an end to AEK’s winning run with an 86-75 victory.

Kolossos Rhodes lost the league’s top scorer, Mike James, to Euroleague challenger Laboral Kutxa, but still managed to beat visiting Trikala 77-69.

Panelefsiniakos thrashed KAO Dramas 83-69, putting the losers in danger of relegation.
