Seven illegal immigrants trying to reach Greece died and nine were rescued off the island of Symi, on April 7, authorities said.

The Turkish Coast Guard saved the survivors near the island which sits off the Turkish coast in the southeast Aegean, the the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported.

According to Turkish authorities the victims were part of a group of 20 Syrians and Iraqis trying to enter Greece without papers. They were also wearing life vests, the Turkish coast guard said.

Both Greek and Turkish coast guard patrols are conducting searches in the area to determine the whereabouts of the other passengers.
