MINEOLA, NY – Madeline Singas, the Chief Assistant District Attorney of Nassau County was sworn in as Acting District Attorney of Nassau County in a ceremony on January 6 in Nassau County Court.

Singas had previously declared her candidacy for a full term and has already hosted successful fundraising events. More than 200 people were gathered at Limani Restaurant in Roslyn on January 5 where more than $100,000 was raised and almost as many were present at the North Ritz Club in Syosset on January 7.

Political veterans were amazed at the turnouts on bitter cold nights in January.

“What can I say to thank you for your support and friendship…I am so overwhelmed by this turnout on the most frigid nights of the year, yet the warmth in this room is overwhelming – and very humbling for me. I am so appreciative of the families that came out in the cold to support me.”

Singas also thanked the guests “on behalf of my husband Theo and our children,” – Deme and Billy – our pride and joy” – and her sister, Dr. Effie Singas “who has been my rock my entire life.”

She touched everyone present when she said, “I am honored to stand here as Acting District Attorney and as a Greek-American,” and proceeded to share her immigrant family history.

With emotion in her voice, Singas said of her late parents, “They didn’t have much, but they had faith a God that would fortify them, and they had faith in this country and its laws that allowed them to prosper…and to educate their daughters in the best schools…They had faith the American Dream would work for them…and the fact that yesterday I raised my hand and was sworn in is proof, and all of us should take comfort that the American dream is alive and well in Nassau County.”

Christopher Kulakis welcomed the guests and thanked the people who have strongly supported the start of the candidacy including Tom and Katherine Koukoumelis.

Kulakis highlighted Singas’ life and career from the perspective of someone who knew her since growing up on the same block in Astoria in immigrant households imbued with the same values of hard work and educational excellence.

Kulakis, who is vice president of the Hellenic Lawyers Association, shared HLA president Michael Hartofilis’s story about Singas. He was told by a judge who presided over one of her early trials: “This young lady is going to be something.”

After thanking the attendees, he said “this is the beginning of the road, and I ask you that this not be your last effort, but your first effort, and I ask you to reach out to your friends, neighbors and colleagues…tell them we need everybody’s help and ask them to recruit volunteers and to provide financial support. This will be a long and difficult campaign but with your help we will be successful… and we will be very proud of having helped Madeline become DA.”

Singas’ husband Theo Apostolou told TNH, “I’m very proud. This is the culmination of her career. The possibility of her being DA of Nassau County is something we never imagined and it is an honor for me and for her.”

He is ready to hit the campaign trail. “It’s a lot of hard work and it’s our first time, but we have a lot of support from the community and a lot of good people behind us, and we have a top-notch team.”

He agrees that volunteering during the summer is a great opportunity for young people who are interested in public service careers and urges Greek-Americans to encourage their children to join the campaign.
