ZURICH – With a sterling performance, Ekaterina Stefanidi won a silver medal for Greece in the women’s pole vault at the European Athletics Championship.

She was poised to win the gold but Anzhelika Sidorova of Russia took it on her final jump, clearing 4.65 meters on her third and last attempt after missing twice.

Both had cleared 4.60 but Stefanidi had fewer misses. Sidorova’s first two attempts at 4.65 were not close but she surged on her last attempt.

Russia’s Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova came third.

Stefanidi’s medal was Greece’s 20th in the history of European Championships. She received a congratulatory telegram from Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

She was the champion of the PAC-12 and the NCAA while at Stanford.
