ATHENS — Greece’s radical left-led government says it will abolish a new maximum security prison built for terrorists and other dangerous criminals, under an overhaul of penal policy.

A justice ministry statement says the reforms will be included in draft legislation due next week.

The ministry also wants to stop the incarceration of minors for crimes that do not carry a life sentence, facilitate early release and offer drug-addicted convicts the option of rehabilitation instead of prison.

The announcement came as anarchists stepped up protests against the maximum security prison, where several anarchist and far left terrorists have been transferred.

A few dozen masked protesters occupied the Athens University law school, preventing students from entering. Similar protests have been held at offices of the ruling SYRIZA party, in government since Jan. 25.
