PYRGOS, Greece – With trash dumped on streets and sidewalks because a landfill has been closed, officials here want government help to get rid of it.

A seaside town on the western Peloponnese, Pyrgos is trying to find a solution to the mountain of waste that has been growing for seven months after the local dump was shut down.

A protest set for the nearby port of Katakolo was called off as town officials hope the Interior Ministry will step in to help.

Efforts to transport the garbage to landfills operated by other municipalities have been rejected and Pyrgos Mayor Gavriil Liatsis is still hoping for the government to take it away somewhere.
