ZURICH – Greece won its second medal at the European Athletics Championships when long jumper Louis Tsatoumas finished second to take the silver.
Briton Greg Rutherford won the event with a leap of 8.29 meters. Tsatoumas leaped 8.15 meters, just one centimeter ahead of France’s Kafetien Gomis, who got the bronze.
Tsatoumas, 32, said he put all his effort into his first jump as he was suffering from an ankle problem and knew he wouldn’t be able to sustain it.
“This medal is a great success for me,” he said. He received a congratulatory telegram from President Karolos Papoulias.
His is the second medal for Greece at these championships after Katerina Stefanidi also won silver in the women’s pole vault.
The Greek athletes are competing despite limited support from the state which has severely cut back its budget for sports, including the national teams.
