BERLIN – Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was in Germany on March 24 for a second day following lengthy meetings with Chancellor Angela Merkel where both leaders sought to mend fences and looked for ways to help Athens reach a deal with bailout creditors.

The two played down differences at a press conference March 23 after a one-hour meeting that took place following a marked deterioration in relations between the two countries in recent weeks. They then met for another five hours behind closed doors before finally breaking off talks at around midnight.

Merkel’s office said early March 24 that the talks were conducted in a “good and constructive atmosphere.”

Tsipras is set to meet opposition leaders from the Left Party and the Greens, as well as those from Merkel’s governing partner Social Democrats.
