ATHENS – Greek officials said the Navy followed a Turkish Navy Corvette that was spotted sailing in Greek waters in the early hours of Nov. 4.
The Defense Ministry said said that the vessel was closely monitored until it re-entered Turkish territory.
The TCG Buyukada sailed from the Gulf of Saros in northwestern Turkey, heading in a southwesterly direction. It was seen passing the Greek islands of Kea and Kythnos, the latter being just over 100 kilometers from the port of Piraeus.
“No Turkish vessel will be permitted to wander around without being watched,” newly-appointed Defense Minister Nikos Dendias told Antenna TV.
That came as Turkey has a warship and research vessel in Cypriot waters, looking for oil and gas in defiance of Cyprus, Greece, the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and the United States, and ramping up tension in the region.
Turkey’s Air Force also regularly violates Greek air space when it wants.
