NICOSIA— Police say a Cyprus court has ordered a former refereeing official into police custody for four days on suspicion that he tried to influence the outcome of lower-league matches as well as under-21 games.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said Thursday that the 56-year-old suspect was a member of the a Cyprus Football Association’s refereeing committee four years ago when the alleged offenses occurred.

In a separate case, Angelides said another court will decide Friday whether to grant a police request to detain the head of  Cyprus’  Referee Association over allegations that the 54-year-old tried to influence the outcome of a first-division match two years ago.

Angelides said the alleged offense occurred during a match between Aris Limassol and Paralimni in April 2012.
