On September 4 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance “of reaching a lasting settlement in Cyprus for the benefit of all Cyprus, in times of great turmoil in the region. He also said that the solution of the Cyprus problem constitutes a strategic priority for the UN,” according to the Cyprus News Agency.

The Secretry-General made a written statement after meeting with the new UNSG`s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide. Ban Ki-moon said “in these times of great turmoil in the region, it is more important than ever to reach a lasting settlement in Cyprus for the benefit of all Cypriots.”

Earlier in the week new Turkish President Erdogan provoked outrage when he spoke of a two-state solution during a visit to illegally occupied Northern Cyprus.
