UNITED NATIONS — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging the European Union to accelerate its support for Italy, Greece and Malta, the countries bearing the biggest burden in rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.
He said Monday that “record numbers of people are fleeing war and persecution” and migrants “urgently need our protection during their hour of greatest need.”
“The death of hundreds of thousands of people and death of hundreds of migrants off the coast of Libya is not only deeply saddening, it should shock the global consciences,” Ban said.
He said the “truly titanic humanitarian tragedy” highlights the need “to address the plight of migrants, to crack down on the criminals who exploit the most vulnerable and to strengthen rescue capacity in the Mediterranean and elsewhere.”
