NICOSIA – United Nations Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide was set to meet newly-elected Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on May 4 and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades the next day.
Eide is hoping to broker the resumption of reunification talks that have picked up some hope with the election of Akinci, a moderate who is reaching out to Anastasiades for compromises over issues that have kept the island divided since an unlawful Turkish invasion in 1974.
The UN official will be on the island until May 12. He will hold meetings with the parties involved ahead of the expected resumption of reunification talks, the Cyprus Mail said.
On Eide will host a dinner for the two leaders. Reports were that the date for the resumption of talks will be announced after the dinner after the initial May 2 start was set back.
