Domaine Jean-Luc Mader, Riesling, 2013

When one thinks of a wine to complement pikantika – spicy foods – a bold red often comes to mind. But a nice change of pace is this dry, vibrant, and young, Riesling from Alsace.

It is quite the gem!

Dry Rieslings in the Alsace region aren’t rare, but to find one at a such a reasonable price point with such edge to it isn’t something I stumble across often enough. Mader delivers another excellent selection with the 2013 Riesling.

Racy and steely, with ripe apple and citrus, acidity certainly drives this wine. It is incredibly crisp, and hits your palate head on. The wine doesn’t lose intensity throughout the palate either, it finishes strong and bright.

This particular bottle would perhaps benefit from some age to settle down and even out, but consumed young it would still pair well with fresh seafood dishes, and particularly meals with a spicy flair!
