Kivelstadt Cellars, Father’s Watch, 2012

Kivelstadt Cellars has produced a portfolio of wines that I find to be classy, interesting, carefully crafted, and also pretty amazing values, which is a combination I think we can all come together and enjoy.

 

Father’s watch is a red blend based on the family grown Syrah.

Four of the big players of the Rhône Valley reds came to play here: 60% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Carignan, and 10% Grenache. Classic Syrah boldness, fruit, and spice are evident right at the start. Medium bodied and rich, the palate of this wine is flavorful yet restrained, and tapers off slowly for its pleasing finish.

 

I do find that this wine shows best when paired with food. It can bring out the best parts of a chicken prepared with red sauce and kalamata olives.
