Faustino I Gran Reserva, 2001
This wine is 100% classic, traditional Rioja.
Aged and ready to drink, this is an outstanding value for older vintage wine. Speaking of ageing, what distinguishes Crianzas, Reservas, and Gran Reservas is just that – ageing. In order to be labeled as a Gran Reserva, the wine must be at least five years old before release, with two of those years spent in barrel.
Red fruit still shows brightly on the palate. As the wine opens up, the marks of maturity and age start to rise to the surface through tertiary flavors of tobacco and warm earth. A marked minerality is present, allowing the wine to show vigor and pep even with thirteen years of age.
Try this with kokoretsi or other spicy, full-flavored meat dishes.
