THESSALONIKI – Greek police said they placed a 37-year-old woman under guard in Ippokrateio Hospital after she was charged with throwing her dead newborn in a garbage dumpster.

The woman, who was not named, reportedly went to the hospital on the night of July 17th in extreme pain and a medical examination indicated that she had given birth very recently.

After being questioned, she reportedly said she had given birth alone at home on July 12, had put the infant in a cupboard for two days and, on its death, had disposed of it in a trash dumpster.

The woman told police she had hidden her pregnancy from her husband.

Her ethnic origin remained unclear with some reports indicating that she is Greek and others that she is a foreign national.
